Chronic dehydration can have detrimental effects on the body. Dehydration simply means the body has a higher demand for water than what it’s receiving to function properly or fight sickness. Just like the earth, the human body is made up of approximately 60-70% water: that’s about two thirds of the body and just a small shift in percentage can cause dysfunction. In other words, water is as vital to our internal ecosystems as it is to our external ecosystems or planet earth. The water molecule alone is energy that binds with, dissolves, and transports vital materials across the cell for cellular respiration. So, staying hydrated means you’re supporting a state of internal balance or homeostasis as water is the basis of all chemical reactions in the body. We are constantly losing water, even if you can’t feel it happening, you’re losing water by means of evaporation right now as you breathe, through thermoregulation of body temperature, and metabolic processes. When you become dehydrated, not only do you feel sluggish with a headache, but your blood becomes thicker making it harder for the kidneys to provide filtration and your heart to circulate and pump blood. Hydration is not only about water alone it’s also about the salt content and electrolytes that match the composition within our vessels. The body has a small range of acid-base balance, that’s why getting an IV that’s formulated with the exact components that your body needs can provide immediate relief of symptoms.
Under the right internal conditions, the body should be running seamlessly, like a well-oiled machine, without symptoms related to illness. Oftentimes we become so engaged with our busy lifestyles that we forget we need rest, recovery, and rejuvenation. Our bodies are simply not meant to be in a state of constant stress and fight or flight mode needs to be turned off to properly recover from illness. Since humans are susceptible to stress, we’re objectively susceptible to disease. Stress is considered the “silent killer” because we oftentimes do not feel the internal effects of stress until its causing chronic disease. Why? The body is so intelligent and constantly evolving, that it has come up with various adaptations that go into effect under stressful conditions. One of the most notable is known as glycolysis. The body uses this system to convert sugar into fuel for cellular metabolism, but in the absence of sugar the body uses fat, a different pathway that provides the same result; however, it is not sustainable overtime. With that said, there are adaptations that have not evolved enough to meet the demands that our current lifestyles make. For example, the elimination of chemicals/free radicals with the help of the body’s master antioxidant, Glutathione. Glutathione is powerful and organically made by the body to excrete hydrogen peroxide (the byproduct of various chemicals that is only considered a threat if not excreted). This is all good news, but the issue is that the body cannot organically produce enough glutathione to remove all the harmful chemicals that humans are exposed to everyday. Chemicals are introduced by environmental factors like smoking or cleaning with household products or even the ingestion of inorganic foods to name a few. We like to believe that the body will eventually evolve enough to excrete all the extra hydrogen peroxide that’s circulating around and causing disease, but until then we supplement with glutathione, vitamins, and minerals, and we remember to stay hydrated to feel our absolute best.
